The Opportunity

The Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science at 911勛圖 (911勛圖) invites applications for a part-time (78%) Term Lecturer appointment in the areas of Organic Chemistry and General Chemistry. We seek exceptional candidates with demonstrated teaching excellence and experience in curriculum development. The successful candidate is expected to be available for teaching and related academic responsibilities throughout the contract period, from January 1, 2027, to December 31, 2027.

Introduction to the Department of Chemistry at 911勛圖

The Department of Chemistry () comprises 35 faculty members with teaching and research interests spanning materials science, inorganic and organic chemistry, physical and analytical chemistry, and chemical biology. The department has vibrant undergraduate and graduate programs and is well-equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. The department is also firmly committed to ensuring an inclusive environment and diversification across our faculty members, including, but not limited to, working to overcome employment bias against Indigenous people, people with non-normative sexualities and/or gender identities, people with disabilities, and racialized people. Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be responsible for teaching the courses listed below in the specified semesters. In consultation with the Department Chair and Associate Chair, they may also be expected to contribute to service activities within the Department and the University.

*Face-to-face (in-person) instruction on the Surrey or Burnaby campus is required.  

Qualifications 

Candidates must have a PhD in Organic Chemistry or the equivalent (e.g., graduate level educational background in the field with extensive relevant teaching experience), an established record of teaching accomplishments within the field of organic chemistry at the undergraduate level, together with evidence of teaching ability commensurate with the responsibility of teaching the assigned credit courses (outlined in the table above) and carrying out the duties related to the effective conduct of those courses. Instructional experience in Organic Chemistry and General Chemistry in lecture and laboratory courses at the undergraduate level is strongly preferred. A demonstrated commitment to excellence in undergraduate education is required.

Faculty salaries at 911勛圖 are based on the salary scales bargained between the University and the 911勛圖 Faculty Association. The Department of Chemistry at 911勛圖 invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of Organic Chemistry. We are seeking an outstanding scholar with a strong commitment to excellence in research, teaching, and service. The expected start date for this position is July 15, 2026. 

This position aims to recruit a top emerging talent in the general area of organic chemistry with an emphasis on organic synthesis and/or chemical biology. Areas of particular interest include the design and testing of biologically relevant organic molecules, and applications of high-throughput assays to discover new bioactive compounds. The position will build on 911勛圖���s international recognition in this area, world-class facilities for drug discovery, and growing capabilities in automated synthesis. Applications that leverage 911勛圖���s Center for High-Throughput Chemical Biology (HTCB, /htcb.html) are a particular focus of this search. The HTCB is a world-leading facility for robotic liquid handling and high-throughput screening, with a particular emphasis on image-based screening. The center enables biological evaluation of large libraries of compounds (e.g. those designed and generated through automated synthesis, computer-based design, and machine learning) and supports users by providing full-time professional staff and a suite of established biological assays.

Chemistry at 911勛圖

The Department of Chemistry () comprises 27 research faculty, with research interests spanning: organic chemistry and chemical biology; inorganic, physical and analytical chemistry; material science; and nuclear science. Current departmental strengths of relevance to this position include medicinal chemistry, natural products chemistry, and chemical biology. The Department has a vibrant graduate program and is well equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. Furthermore, 911勛圖���s core facilities such as the HTCB, Fir (Canada���s most powerful academic supercomputer), and the Big Data Hub provide opportunities for interdisciplinary research and foster interactions with research partners across the University, government, and local industries. The Department is supported by an experienced team of research technicians, administrators, and teaching support staff. Furthermore, Chemistry researchers have access to 911勛圖���s Science Technical Centre which includes a machine shop, electronics shop, and scientific glassblower, all managed by full-time professional staff.

Lecturers are integral members of the Faculty of Science and play an important role in advancing the University���s teaching mission. The 911勛圖 Department of Mathematics is a leading mathematics department in Canada. Key Responsibilities

In the Department of Mathematics, the normal annual teaching workload for a full-time Lecturer is 6 courses. Teaching assignments are determined in accordance with the department���s workload policy and the 911勛圖/911勛圖FA Collective Agreement.

At least one semester in nine, a Lecturer will have no teaching duties assigned. For the purposes of this entitlement, the non-teaching semester is one in which the Lecturer would normally have taught at least two regular courses or their equivalent.

The responsibilities of the successful candidate will include:

• Preparing, teaching, and updating assigned undergraduate courses;

• Supervising and collaborating with teaching assistants associated with assigned courses;

• Contributing to course and curriculum development;

• Working with a team of other teaching and research faculty to ensure consistency of instruction and assessment across lower division courses; 

• Maintaining currency in the discipline and engaging in relevant pedagogical and professional development;

• Contributing to educational leadership and initiatives that support effective and inclusive teaching and learning; and

• Undertaking administrative and service responsibilities assigned by the Chair in consultation with the Lecturer, which may include contributions to curriculum development, academic integrity, student recruitment and outreach, and departmental or University committees.

The Department uses a workshop, or learning-centre, model to support students in lower-division courses. Responsibilities of the successful candidate will also include coordination of a workshop and supervision and mentoring of teaching assistants affiliated with the workshop.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate is expected to possess the following qualifications.

The position requires a minimum of:

• A Master���s degree in mathematics or applied mathematics (a PhD will be considered an asset);

• Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching mathematics, including experience teaching large classes.

• Ability to teach a range of undergraduate mathematics courses and problem-solving strategies, including those relevant to the course FAN X99 ��� Foundations of Analytical and Quantitative Reasoning. 

• Experience using technology in the classroom for the purposes of instruction and assessment;

• Dedication to creating an environment that supports diverse populations and perspectives, and a commitment to creating inclusive learning experiences.

The successful candidate should also have:

• Experience supervising and mentoring teaching assistants;

• Experience integrating the use of modern computational tools into lower division courses;

• Demonstrated interest in curriculum development;

• Demonstrated interest in the pedagogical enhancement and scholarship of teaching and learning initiatives; 

• A vision for university education with proactive responses to the rapid growth in the usage and capabilities of artificial intelligence tools;

• Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and to lead and manage groups in instructional settings; 

• Evidence of promise in educational leadership;

• Evidence of involvement in, or commitment to, service to the academic profession, the University, or the broader community.

Preferred Qualifications

• Post-secondary physics teaching experience beyond teaching-assistant work;

• Experience with curriculum design and teaching-assistant supervision;

• Experience applying evidence-based pedagogy; 

• Experience with physics outreach and public communication; and

• For one of the two positions, the ability to teach introductory astrophysics.

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science comprises 27 continuing faculty members, including five specializing in actuarial science. The department is recognized internationally for its academic excellence, commitment to pedagogy, and being home to the Canadian Statistical Sciences Institute. Our department is a short walk from the University Childcare Centre, athletic facilities, and scenic hiking trails.

The Department offers degrees in actuarial science at the bachelor���s and master���s levels. Doctoral studies focusing on actuarial science are available through our PhD program in Statistics. The Department is also exploring several new initiatives at the intersection of actuarial science and climate risk. 

We are dedicated to preparing students for lifelong learning and producing professionals who demonstrate integrity and ethical behaviour. Our graduates are critical and creative thinkers, skilled at problem-solving and equipped to meet the challenges of the future. The actuarial science unit���s success in teaching, research, and industry engagement has earned 911勛圖 the designation of Center of Actuarial Excellence from the Society of Actuaries (SOA). Beginning in Fall 2026, our program also participates in the SOA���s University-Earned Credit program. Our undergraduate actuarial science program has also been fully accredited since the introduction of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries��� University Accreditation Program.

Key responsibilities of the position

• Develop and maintain an active and externally funded research program.

• Teach a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in our actuarial science programs. 

• Supervise and mentor graduate students in the Actuarial Science Master���s program and the Statistics PhD program with a focus in actuarial science.

• Contribute to service activities within the department, faculty, and university.

• Engage in research and service activities with the broader scientific and academic community.

• Contribute to the development of new departmental research, teaching, and outreach initiatives, including initiatives at the intersection of actuarial science and climate risk. 

• Contribute to teaching, research, or curriculum initiatives addressing the implications and applications of artificial intelligence in actuarial science.

The typical workload distribution for tenure-track assistant professors in our department is 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% service.

Qualifications

Appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor requires a strong academic record, completed academic or professional training, evidence of effective teaching or the potential for teaching excellence, potential to grow in stature as a scholar, and a willingness to contribute actively to the University. The successful candidate must have: 

• A PhD in actuarial science or a closely related field by the employment start date; however, PhD candidates with solid indication of imminent completion may be hired at the rank of Instructor and will be promoted to the rank of Assistant Professor upon completion of the PhD.

• A demonstrated record of, or clear potential for, research excellence, as evidenced by the quality, originality, and potential impact of research outputs and other scholarly contributions appropriate to the candidate���s career stage and opportunities.

• The potential to develop and sustain an active, externally funded research program.

• Evidence of effective teaching or the potential for teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels. 

• Evidence of, or a strong commitment to, contributing actively through service to the Department, Faculty, University, academic profession, or broader community.

• The ability and willingness to teach courses across the actuarial science curriculum, including courses aligned with the core actuarial syllabus.

• The ability to communicate effectively and work collegially with students, faculty, staff, and external partners.

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science in the Faculty of Science, 911勛圖, invites applications for a part-time (75%) limited-term teaching faculty position at the rank of Lecturer for a term of 8 months, with the possibility of renewal for 4 months depending on budget and enrollments. The position���s expected start date is January 1, 2027. Preference will be given to candidates with experience teaching Statistics at the undergraduate level.

Qualifications

Teaching excellence is the primary criterion for this position. The successful candidate must hold a PhD in Statistics or a closely related field by the employment start date; however, PhD candidates with solid indication of imminent completion may be considered. 

The ideal candidate will have: 

• A PhD in Statistics or in a relevant field, including but not limited to: Mathematical Statistics, Applied Statistics, Biostatistics, and Data Science;

Duties

The successful candidate will: 

• Teach 2 undergraduate courses per semester in the Undergraduate Statistics Program and/or the Data Science Program;
• Work with colleagues to support diverse students and develop the Department���s curriculum;
• Participate in service to the Program, Department, the University and the broader community. 

They will teach introductory courses in Probability and Statistics; and upper-level courses on topics such as Discrete Data Analysis, Multivariate Analysis, Data Science, Statistics communication, depending on the candidate���s area of expertise.

The Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science was created in 2001 and has since grown into a dynamic group of approximately 530 undergraduate students, 62 graduate students, and 24 faculty members.
