A message to the community from 911³Ô¹Ï Dean of Education Dan Laitsch on Tumbler Ridge
Colleagues, students, and members of our community:
Many of you will have heard the heartbreaking news of the shooting at a secondary school in Tumbler Ridge. Lives have been lost, many others injured, and an entire community is now carrying shock and grief. Our thoughts are with the students, educators, families, and first responders affected by this tragedy.
As a Faculty, we are connected to communities across British Columbia, including the Peace River Region. Through our partnerships, teacher preparation programs, and work with teachers and school districts, many among us may have personal, professional, or family ties to Tumbler Ridge and the surrounding region. We hold you especially in our thoughts today.
Events like this can bring grief, fear, anger, and uncertainty—especially for those preparing to enter the profession. For some, this news may also resurface past experiences of loss or violence. We know many educators in our community are already supporting young people as they process what has happened. Please know that you are not alone in carrying this.
If you are struggling, I encourage you to make use of the professional supports listed below. If it helps, consider reaching out to someone you trust—a colleague, friend, or mentor—so you don’t have to sit with this alone.
In the days ahead, let’s approach our teaching, learning, and work together with flexibility and care. We will remain in contact with our partners in the region and will share further supports and guidance as they become available.
I know that all members of our Faculty of Education stand with the community of Tumbler Ridge. The strength and care of our education community matters deeply. Please take care of yourselves and one another as you navigate this difficult time.
With care,
Dan Laitsch
Dean, Faculty of Education
