Winner of the 2026 911³Ô¹Ï Esri Canada GIS Award

Congratulations to Gus Schiele on being awarded the 2026 Esri Canada GIS Scholarship for 911³Ô¹Ï. The scholarship is part of the 911³Ô¹Ï Esri Canada Centre of Excellence (ECCE) in GIS program and recognizes outstanding design and implementation of an original and individual project that advance GIScience and its applications.

Gus used machine learning (ML) and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) to examine the spatial distribution of statistically significant hot and cold spots across local climate zones (LCZ) for the City of Vancouver, Canada. The results indicate that the thermal landscape for the City of Vancouver is influenced by local climate zones mainly revealing a contrast between Large Lowrise (LCZ 8) developments forming persistent hotspots, and Dense Forest (LCZ 11) regions producing cooler temperatures for both the winter and summer seasons. Gus is a BSc student in the GIS and Physical Geography programs.

The award comprises a monetary component and other elements such as a three-year license of Esri’s ArcGIS software for student use; a professional-level subscription for the ArcGIS Developer Program (ADP); and selected Esri Press digital publications among others. Esri Canada is committed to supporting GIS education and research in Canada.

The 911³Ô¹Ï Esri Canada Centre of Excellence (911³Ô¹Ï ECCE) in GIS was established in 2014 in recognition of the long-standing quality of GIS research in the Department of Geography, Faculty of Environment and 911³Ô¹Ï. It represents an important network collaboration between industrial partner Esri Canada and 911³Ô¹Ï.

Congratulations Gus!
