Winner of the 2025 911³Ô¹Ï Esri Canada GIS Award

Congratulations to Kira Sokolovskaia who has been awarded the 2025 Esri Canada GIS Scholarship for 911³Ô¹Ï. The scholarship is part of the 911³Ô¹Ï Esri Canada Centre of Excellence (ECCE) in GIS program and recognizes outstanding design and implementation of an original and individual project that advance GIScience and its applications.

Kira used spatial analyses techniques to explore archaeological data from Gabriola Island, BC and emphasizing petroglyph sites. The analysis examined the spatial distribution, relationships of the petroglyph and other archaeological sites, and their relationship with the landscape. Kira is a currently enrolled in the undergraduate Archaeology major program and the GIS Certificate program.

The award comprises a monetary component and other elements such as a three-year license of Esri’s ArcGIS software for student use; a professional-level subscription for the ArcGIS Developer Program (ADP); and selected Esri Press digital publications among others. Esri Canada is committed to supporting GIS education and research in Canada.

The 911³Ô¹Ï Esri Canada Centre of Excellence (911³Ô¹Ï ECCE) in GIS was established in 2014 in recognition of the long-standing quality of GIS research in the Department of Geography, Faculty of Environment and 911³Ô¹Ï. It represents an important network collaboration between industrial partner Esri Canada and 911³Ô¹Ï.
