MBB 229 Introductory Molecular Biology & Biochemistry Laboratory

SESSIONAL INSTRUCTOR POSITION
MOLECULAR BIOLOGY AND BIOCHEMISTRY

Burnaby Campus

The following Sessional Instructor appointment is expected to be available in the Department of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry during the Fall 2026 term: Sept. 2, 2026 to Dec. 24, 2026.

Course:    MBB 229-3 (Introductory Molecular Biology & Biochemistry Laboratory)
Salary:    $9,534 (inclusive of 4% vacation pay)
Labs:    Thurs/Fri 1:30 – 5:20 pm (South Science Building, Burnaby Campus, 911³Ô¹Ï)

Course description:  Practical course providing hands-on experience in fundamental molecular biology and biochemistry techniques including DNA isolation, restriction enzyme digestion, transformation, polymerase chain reaction, DNA and protein electrophoresis and immunofluorescence. Responsibilities: The instructor will introduce each lab session and supervise students with the assistance of the Teaching Assistants (TAs). The instructor will evaluate student performance in the lab, grade lab reports, give and grade lab exams with the help of the TAs. The instructor will be responsible for training and supervising TAs and coordinating lab setup with the technician.

Minimum qualifications:

  • M.Sc. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biology, Biomolecular Physiology or related discipline
  • strong background and practical experience in basic molecular biology and biochemistry methods
  • experience teaching molecular biology / biochemistry laboratory courses at the post-secondary level
  • experience working with bacteria, proteins and DNA
  • ability to communicate theory and practical instructions related to course experiments
  • experience evaluating student learning through a variety of assessment formats including lab reports, quizzes and experimental results
  • excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills

Recommended qualifications:

  • demonstrated experience with learning management systems and educational technologies to support undergraduate teaching
