Please join us for a screening of Bruce McDonald鈥檚 1996 pseudo-rockumentary , followed by a Q & A and discussion with Michael Turner, who wrote the book the film is based on, and Christine Haebler, who was the film's producer, moderated by SCA MA student Bijan Karim.
As well as marking the anniversary of the film, an important focus of Turner, Haebler, and Karim's conversation will be the creative and commercial process of adapting a book for a film.
Biographies
Michael Turner is the Vancouver-based author of the book Hard Core Logo which was published in 1993. The book was inspired by his experiences fronting a local band named 'Hard Rock Miners' who toured across Canada and released four albums of music. Several songs featured in the film were written by Turner. Also, a musician and songwriter, Turner's unique writing style combines poetry and prose, using multi-format and intertextual approaches. He has written several award-winning books and also won the Best Original Song Genie Award for Who the Hell Do You Think You Are? which is sung by Joe Dick in the film. He lives in Vancouver and remains active as an artist.
In the film business since 1983, Christine Haebler started off in production on various big budget studio films. A 34-year film veteran, Christine earned a Best Motion Picture Genie nomination for her first producing venture, Hard Core Logo, which was picked up for distribution by Quentin Tarantino through Miramax in the US. Over the years, she has served as producer on seminal films such as Bones of Crows, Monkey Man, and Indian Horse.
Bijan Karim is an independent filmmaker with years of professional experience. He was originally born in Istanbul, Turkey, which he still considers his hometown and visits regularly. He is inspired by the poetry of the region and it remains an influence on his world view and filmmaking style. His writing approach is multi-disciplinary, drawing influence from his martial arts experience. He is a member of the Writer鈥檚 Guild of Canada and Union of BC Performers. In the future, he is interested in creating a teaching method to convey his film-making philosophy.
