TA Positions
REM/SD/PLAN TEACHING ASSISTANT APPOINTMENT PRIORITY
Updated June 15, 2026
Priority for appointment/reappointment as a Teaching Assistant is in accordance with Article XIII of the Collective Agreement with the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU).
Priority for appointment/reappointment as a Tutor-Marker is in accordance with Article XV of the Collective Agreement with the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU).
In allocating Teaching Assistant positions, the department will also consider the following:
- Amount of financial support offered on admission to the graduate program;
- Sufficient knowledge in the discipline of the course to interpret the course material (e.g. discipline of prior degree(s), publications, experience, research interests, courses taken);
- Course and instructor evaluations from previous TA/TM positions held;
- Instructor requests;
- Applicant preferences.
If an assignment within a priority group requires a selection between applicants, the graduate student without financial support from merit-based scholarships or merit-based fellowships during the semester of appointment with a value equal to at least a full graduate fellowship or $7000, whichever is greater, will have priority for the appointment.
To be considered for re-employment, graduate students must maintain satisfactory performance as a teaching assistant or tutor marker. The re-employment of teaching assistants/tutor markers will also depend upon the needs and budget resources of the University.
Late applications may be considered if additional applicants are needed to fill positions.
REM expects applicants to respond within one week of receiving a TA appointment offer, failure to reply with acceptance may result in loss of priority for a position.
