Teaching Assistants lead undergraduate tutorials, evaluate written work, and mark examinations. At 911³Ô¹Ï History, a full TAship equals five base units (approximately 210 hours per semester). The department values a full TAship at $7,208.00 per semester for MA students and $8,358.00 per semester for PhD students. If low enrolment requires us to cancel tutorials, TAships tied to enrolment may drop below five base units or be cancelled altogether. 

At admission, the program may offer you a set number of semesters of TAship support. The department works to match TA assignments with your field of specialization. Approximately 9–10 weeks before the semester starts, the department notifies all current and incoming students about available TAships. You must still apply for TA positions, even if your admission letter includes TAship funding.

Teaching Assistants work under the Teaching Support Staff Union (TSSU) collective agreement.

From time to time, Research Assistantships (RAs) may become available to graduate students through faculty research grants. Keep an eye on your 911³Ô¹Ï email for these opportunities.

Graduate fellowships (GFs), worth $7,000 (or $3,500 for a partial GF) are the most commonly offered scholarships by the department. We accept applications at the time of application to the program and, for current students, in the fall semester, for awards tenable in the upcoming spring.

Academic merit is the primary criterion for ranking eligible applicants for a Graduate Fellowship (GF). When awarding GFs, the History GPC may also consider equity among and between graduate student cohorts, as well as recruitment of incoming students.

funds and supports postsecondary research and research training in the social sciences and humanities, including funding opportunities for MA & PhD students. 

We encourage all eligible MA students to apply for a Canadian Graduate Scholarship, Master's Program (CGS M), $17,500 for 12 months, non-renewable. 911³Ô¹Ï’s internal deadline for the CGS M is usually December 1.

Eligible PhD students should apply for  and SSHRC Doctoral Fellowships ($20,000 a year). 911³Ô¹Ï’s internal deadline for SSHRC doctoral scholarships is usually November 1.
