Concentrations in Economics

Students completing an economics major or honours program have the option to declare a Concentration - a focused grouping of courses in a particular subject area. Successful completion of a Concentration will be noted on your transcript and signal your academic focus to potential employers. 

Concentration in Economic Data Analysis

The Economic Data Analysis concentration equips students with the quantitative and technical skills needed to succeed in an increasingly data- and AI-driven economy. Through training in econometrics, statistical computing, and data visualization, students learn how to analyze complex datasets and generate insights that inform real-world decisions.

Courses in this concentration may include: 

  • Econometrics
  • Data visualization
  • Experimental and behavioural economics
  • Statistics 
  • Applied market design

Students qualify for this concentration by completing six required courses of which at least four must be ECON courses. A full list of accepted courses can be found in the Program Calendars for the major, honours, and joint major/honours programs.

Concentration in Economic Analysis for Public Policy

The Economic Analysis for Public Policy concentration prepares students to apply economic tools to complex public challenges in a rapidly changing policy environment. In an era where AI can generate analysis but not judgment, the need for professionals who can interpret evidence, weigh trade-offs, and design effective policy is more important than ever.

Courses in this concentration may include: 

  • Economics of education
  • Health economics
  • Labor economics
  • Public policy 
  • Economics development

Students qualify for this concentration by completing six required courses of which at least five must be ECON courses. A full list of accepted courses can be found in the Economics Major program calendar description.
