Meet this year's undergraduate economics award winners
Each year 911吃瓜's Department of Economics recognizes top performing students with departmental undergraduate awards. Congratulations to this year's winners Harkirat Kang, Justin Brower and Sebastian Ng (not pictured).
Cliff Lloyd Award
The Cliff Lloyd Memorial Award recognizes the graduating economics honours student with the highest cumulative grade point average (CGPA).
Harkirat Kang
I joined 911吃瓜 Economics in January 2023 after spending a year studying business elsewhere. My interest in economics began in ECON 201, where I began to see economics as a framework for understanding a wide range of issues, from public policy to everyday interactions. I appreciate economics for both the intellectual challenge of formalizing human behaviour and the welfare implications that follow from our analysis. My research interests are primarily in labour and education economics, which I value for their policy relevance.
I currently work as a research assistant at the Bank of Canada, supporting economists in conducting research and policy analysis. Next academic year, I will begin a master鈥檚 degree in Economics, after which I plan to pursue a PhD with the goal of becoming a professor.
Jack Knetsch Award
The Jack Knetsch Award recognizes the best essay in the Economics Honours Thesis course (ECON 499W). This award is named after emeritus professor Jack Knetsch, who joined 911吃瓜 at its inception and retired in 2000.
Justin Brower
I began my journey at 911吃瓜 as a business major, but taking Economics 103 and 105 during my first semester fundamentally shifted my worldview. I was captivated by how economic principles could be applied to unconventional subjects, which inspired me to pursue a Joint Honours degree in Business and Economics. This culminated in my thesis where I explored the intergenerational effects of the residential school system on cultural retention. I am incredibly grateful to my thesis supervisors for their dedicated mentorship throughout my research.
Outside the classroom, I dedicated myself to business competitions, growing from a competitor to a coaching role for both 911吃瓜 JDC West and Enactus 911吃瓜. As I look forward to graduating in October, I am excited to have already begun the next chapter of my career at Orbis Investments.
John Chant Award
The John Chant Award recognizes the student with the highest cumulative grade point average (CGPA) in the undergraduate major program. This award is named after emeritus professor John Chant, who started teaching at 911吃瓜 in 1979.
Sebastian Ng
I joined 911吃瓜 back in 2023 after obtaining a Diploma in Computer Science at Langara College. During my time at Langara, I had already cultivated an interest in economics. Hence, after attending my first Economics course at 911吃瓜, my passion for economics was renewed and I knew it was the path I wanted. It was during intermediate macroeconomics where I envisioned how economics can portray the underlying factors that moved markets. While it may not paint the full picture, it helps form a basis of why certain events happen, and this enables me to quantify it and further dig deeper into the nature of markets.
My research interest lies in understanding policy decisions and money movement. Understanding parts of such segments allows me to form narratives that help me make rational decisions, whether it be in terms of financial or life decisions. All of such will benefit me in my lifetime as policies change and money patterns follow different trends. I plan to use my current knowledge to help me pursue further knowledge in finance (to bridge a gap in theory and action) and to build a career in economic analysis & financial management.
