School of Communication Introduces Topic Pathways to Undergraduate Curriculum

As communication careers evolve at a rapid pace, students are looking for more than a one-size-fits-all degree. To meet this need, the School of Communication is introducing new Topic Pathways that empower students to explore specialized areas of interest while still building a strong foundation in communication theory and practice.
The School will be introducing four Topic Pathways beginning in Fall 2026: public communication, news and audiences; media, production and literacy; media, intersectionality and popular culture; and technology and society. These pathways represent organized clusters of courses to support students in a specific area of study.
"The Topic Pathways tool is designed to help students explore the wide range of courses offered in the School of Communication and to build a degree that aligns with academic interests, career goals, and personal aspirations. By organizing courses around key topics and areas of interest, Topic Pathways makes it easier to discover learning opportunities, understand how courses connect, and identify options that support individual goals,鈥� says Chris Jeschelnik, Undergraduate Chair in the School of Communication.
These pathways are intended to complement the guidance provided by the School of Communication鈥檚 academic advising team. By referencing the Topic Pathways resource, students can anticipate which courses they would like to take in future semesters. Combined with academic advising, students will have the support needed to make the most of their Communication degree.
鈥淥ur program has always prioritized giving our students maximum flexibility to complete their degree by following their interests,鈥� says Milena Droumeva, School of Communication Director.
鈥淗owever, we also realized we need to help students make sense of the thematic sets of courses we have available, to allow them to make more informed choices. The Topic Pathways do just that: give students a collection of courses that go deeper into a particular area of communication studies and allow them to gain a specialization, both in terms of knowledge and skills.鈥�
