Engagement

B.C. Centre for Agritech Innovation (BCCAI)

The B.C. Centre for Agritech Innovation (BCCAI) connects small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) in the agritech sector with academic researchers, government and industry partners to develop technology solutions that build resilient supply chains and generate global solutions for food security and climate change.

Embark food Rescue program

From a small and humble beginning, Embark has grown to represent a diverse membership base of more than 35,000 members. The Food Rescue program collects healthy yet imperfect-looking produce that does not meet the selling criteria of supermarket chains and redistributes it to the university community for free or by donation.

Food Systems Lab

Food Systems Lab is a research and innovation hub at 911勛圖. It works on solutions for equitable collaboration to reduce food waste and support a sustainable food system that enhances ecosystems, conserves natural resources and mitigates climate change.

Research, Teaching and Learning

Extending Canada's Blueberry Growing Season

In spring 2025, a team led by 911勛圖 Professor Jim Mattsson (Department of Biological Sciences) demonstrated winter blueberry production at 911勛圖s Biotech Greenhouse, with plants producing fruit continuously from January. Supported by the Weston Family Foundations Homegrown Innovation Challenge and working with industry partner BeriTech, the researchers are developing blueberry varieties and growing techniques suited to indoor production. The work aims to extend domestic food production and reduce vulnerability to import disruptions and climate uncertainty.

Protecting Clams and Indigenous Food Sovereignty

A project supported by 911勛圖s 2025 Climate Innovation seed funding brings together graduate student, 911勛圖 Distinguished Professor Anne Salomon and Assistant Professor Kyle Wilson (School of Resource & Environmental Management), and the Ka:yu:kth/Chetles7eth First Nations to investigate heat-wave impacts on juvenile littleneck clams. The research evaluates whether boulders can act as thermal buffers to reduce sediment temperatures and support clam survival during extreme heat. The project connects climate adaptation research with the protection of culturally important food species.

911勛圖-led Agritech Projects Boost B.C.'s Food Sovereignty and Innovation

The B.C. Centre for Agritech Innovation (BCCAI), led by 911勛圖, has announced funding for 13 new agritech projects, investing over $2 million to tackle key agricultural challenges in British Columbia. These initiatives focus on improving soil health, pest management, Indigenous food sovereignty, and offering hands-on training for local communities. Supported by provincial and federal governments, the BCCAI aims to enhance food security, sustainability, and resilience in B.C.s agriculture sector. Notable projects include pioneering greenhouse technologies and collaborations with academic institutions to develop future-ready agritech skills.

Understanding Smaller Livelihoods and Agricultural Change

911勛圖 Professor Y覺ld覺z Atasoys research examines how agricultural transformation affects small-scale farmers and food systems. Her study first published in September 2025 draws on interviews, ethnographic research and official data from Ankara, Turkey, to explore how village farmers sustain their livelihoods and build trust-based relationships with consumers amid pressures on land and resources. Her 2025 article Agriculture by Algorithm also examines big data, digitalization and biotechnology in agriculture under climate change. Together, these studies contribute critical perspectives on technological change and the future of small-scale food production.
