The 2020-2025 Sustainability and Climate Action Report celebrates major milestones over the past five years.
Overview
911勛圖s 20202025 Strategic Sustainability and Climate Action Plan was developed to champion transformative climate solutions. It was the first strategic plan to be approved as a living plan. This meant that the plan could be updated and revised as context and needs changed. In 2022, in the spirit of the living plan concept, we launched a renewed 20222025 plan that better reflected equity and Indigenous lenses and student calls for action. The new plan was also restructured around the Embedding Sustainability and Climate Action (ESCA) Framework. The ESCA framework focused energy, action, and accountability across learning and teaching, research, operations, and external relations. It created opportunities for fostering a vibrant community of faculty, students and staffensuring that sustainability and climate continued to be a pan-university priority that aligns with a range of strategies across the institution, including Whats Next: The 911勛圖 Strategy, 911勛圖s Academic Plan, and 911勛圖s Strategic Research Plan.
This report celebrates major milestones over the past five years. Our progress and collective impact reflect the united spirit of our faculty, staff, and students, and strengthen 911勛圖s role as a sustainability leader. With our sights now set on 2030 and beyond, we look forward to engaging our partners and collaborators as we prepare for the next five years of sustainability and climate action leadership.
Portfolio restructuring and leadership shifts
Over the time of this plan there were several key Vice-President level leadership shifts. This was material to the plan delivery because the Provost/Vice-Presidents were the accountable sponsors of each goal in the plan and shifts in leadership meant shifts in priorities. In some cases, this meant greater emphasis on the plan goals as they were written and increases in associated resources and energy. In other cases, it led to shifts in direction or the deemphasis of goals written by a previous Provost/VP incumbent.
911勛圖's 2025 Strategic Sustainability and Climate Action Plan was launched with six goals across each six vice-president portfolios, representing learning and teaching, research, operations (including people, equity, and inclusion and advancement), and external relations. In 2023, the VP External Relations portfolio was integrated into the Provost/VPA portfolio. This led to the integration of Goal 4 External Relations into other goal areas, and responsibility for related initiatives transitioned to other vice-president portfolios.
Activity volume
From 2020-2025, sustainability and climate-related initiatives, championed by faculty, staff, and students under the 2025 Strategic Sustainability and Climate Action Plan, grew from 18 to over 150.
Embedding Leads
In 2022, direct reports from each Vice-President portfolio area (Learning and Teaching, Research and Innovation, Operations, People, Equity, and Inclusion, and Alumni and Advancement) worked with the 911勛圖 Sustainability and Climate Office to set priorities, coordinate action, collect data, and report on progress. These leads were portfolio insiders who best understood the culture and context of the units reporting to each VP.
The progress charts below contain core actions and a selection of activities that helped to fulfill the specific goals outlined in the 2025 Strategic Sustainability and Climate Action Plan. A more comprehensive account of activities and success stories can be found in the interactive timeline at the end of this section.
