The 911³Ô¹Ï Research Centre for Scottish Studies is a multidisciplinary research centre with the following objectives:
It is our goal to become a centre of excellence in the teaching and research of Scottish history as well as Scottish settlement in the Pacific Northwest. Our aim is to be a community hub that engages the local, national and international community of Scots and people of Scottish descent. will advance our research, teaching, community engagement and international objectives.
As a research centre, we aim to create a permanent special collection of Scottish-interest books and archives related to Scots in the Pacific Northwest, and expand the "Scottish Voices From the West Oral History" project, connecting with individuals in Scotland who had family members emigrate to Western Canada. In addition, we aim to guarantee the teaching of credit courses in Scottish Studies at 911³Ô¹Ï, develop exchanges between students at 911³Ô¹Ï and Scottish universities, create a permanent field school to introduce 911³Ô¹Ï students to Scotland in a learning environment, and create scholarships to encourage undergraduates and graduates to choose Scottish Studies as a focus.
As an community hub we aim to engage with interested parties in British Columbia and around the globe by offering non-credit courses for community members in topics such as Scottish history, the Gaelic language, contemporary Scottish literature and genealogy, and continuing to offer high-profile speaker series, bringing members of Scotland’s cultural, educational, governmental and business communities to Vancouver to address a variety of local audiences.
