Dugan O'Neil reappointed as vice-president, research and innovation
This message is sent on behalf of Joy Johnson, president and vice-chancellor, to all faculty and staff at 911³Ô¹Ï.
I am pleased to share that Dr. Dugan O’Neil has been reappointed for a five-year term as 911³Ô¹Ï’s vice-president research and innovation (VPRI), effective July 1, 2026 - June, 30 2031.
A search committee for this role was formed in December 2025 in accordance with GP 29. Following a community consultation and performance review, present committee members unanimously recommended Dr. O'Neil’s reappointment, and the Board approved this recommendation at the March 26 Board meeting.
Through the reappointment process, we heard about Dr. O’Neil’s many accomplishments during his first term, such as overseeing research continuity through the COVID-19 pandemic and return to campus and the development and publication of 911³Ô¹Ï’s 2023-2028 Strategic Research Plan. He also secured critical financial support from government and industry and advanced major initiatives, including the university’s inaugural AI strategy, the Clean Hydrogen Hub and the Cedar Supercomputing Centre.
In his second term, Dr. O’Neil will continue bringing 911³Ô¹Ï’s vision of being a leading research university to life through transformative research and innovation projects, collaboration with industry, government and communities and work that positions B.C. and Canada to lead on the world stage.
I would like to thank members of the search committee for their time and consideration, as well as all members of the community who provided feedback as part of the consultation process. Please join me in congratulating Dr. O’Neil on his reappointment.
Sincerely,
Joy Johnson
President & Vice-Chancellor
