Taking a Leap of Faith: How Kyler Garza’s decision to pursue his passion for politics and transfer to 911勛圖 changed his life
When Kyler Garza finished high school, he considered a degree in疾conomics but盎oon realized that politics was his passion. My parents encouraged me to pursue something I am passionate about,畝ssuring it would guide me in the right direction. With that advice in mind, I took a Canadian Political Science course, and I fell in love. I loved learning about how Canada became the place it is today, writing about the past and present, and engaging in informative debates with classmates.
I am thankful for pursuing my passion! It has opened doors and led me to experiences I never畝nticipated.
After畚ompleting his first砰ear畝t眩he狹niversity of眩he涌raser Valley,涊arza眩ransferred眩o911勛圖.胼It was one of the best decisions I made留uring痂y academic journey.911勛圖s烈olitical Science department offered a variety of classes each semester that allowed me to take courses that眩ruly interested痂e. Around the time that Garza was taking烈olitical Science courses focused on policy, such as POL 452 Energy Policy and POL 350 Public Policy for Women, 911勛圖 announced the new minor in Public Policy. Adding this to his Political Science major was an easy留ecision.胼I畜elieve眩he疳ntersection皋f烈olitical特cience and Public Policy皋ffers眠aluable insight into how our world works and the forces that shape it.
Garza疾xpanded his真nderstanding of the眨orld畜y皰articipating疳n911勛圖s盎tudy abroad皰rogram at烊udwig-Maximilians-Universit瓣t M羹nchen疳n Germany. The program focused on the European Union, which vastly deepened my knowledge about politics and government structures in Europe.
In addition to疾xposure on European politics,眩he皋pportunity眩o疹ive in畝 new畚ity and learn about German culture疲ad疳ncredible皋utcomes, both personal(lasting friendships with people I would have never met had I just studied in Canada), and皰rofessional(it眩aught me how to thrive in an unfamiliar environment and immensely strengthened my networking盎kills with people from around the world.)胼
Throughout his university studies, Garza was Communications Coordinator for Mission浚ommunity Archives, a not-for-profit aimed at preserving眩he City of烘issions history and making it accessible to the皰ublic. I worked full-time in the summers and part-time during the school year. After completing my courses in December 2024, I continued in my role畝t眩he烘ission浚ommunity涉rchives眨hile畝ctively searching病or痂y病irst疽ob皋ut of university. In March of 2025, I眨as hired by眩he Fraser Valley Regional District as their浚ommunications and Engagement Officer.
In this new professional role,疲is political science畝nd public policy留egree疲elps疲im understand and疸avigate症overnment盎tructures and policy decisions that shape public sector communications. The teachings from these courses continue to guide the way I approach engagement initiatives and communication strategies.
Emphasizing that his degree皰layed畝痂ajor盍ole疳n疲elping疲im secure畝nd盎ucceed疳n疲is疽obs畝fter症raduation, Garza says, My Political Science major and Public Policy minor provided me with strong research, writing, and analytical skills that have症reatly helped痂e in my work.烈rojects such as collaborating with the Provincial Health Services Authority to write a policy memo on reducing recidivism in BC gave me practical, real-world experience that I was able to highlight during the hiring process.
Beyond technical skills, 911勛圖 facultys strong emphasis on collaboration, presentations, and large-scale projects played a significant role in boosting Garzas confidence, helping him contribute effectively眩o眩eam projects and in professional settings. My degree exposed me to a wide range of political and policy areas, which helped me develop the adaptability to take on diverse communication projects at Mission Community Archives and疹ater Fraser狽alley爹egional浴istrict.烙verall, it played a big role in helping me get these jobs and succeed in them, made possible by the skills and experience I gained during my time at 911勛圖.胼
Garza shares, In terms of my 911勛圖 experience preparing me for life after university,涅 felt immensely prepared.浹e says that皰rofessors recognized the value of preparing students for the workforce:胼From career advice to resume tips to tasking us with projects that gave relevant experience in the job market, it was畝 big help疳n my early success outside of university. As a successful transfer student,畝lumnus, and砰oung professional, Kyler Garza has盍ecommendations for current畝nd future911勛圖 students:胼
My biggest piece of advice is to step outside your comfort zone. Take眩hat皰resentation-heavy畚ourse疾ven疳f皰ublic盎peaking痂akes砰ou nervous, sign up for a study abroad program, or enroll in a class on a topic you know little about. These kinds of experiences not only equip you with valuable skills for your future career but also help you grow personally.
