Biography

Dr. Jask戔waan Bedard is a Haida language educator and advocate from G戔aw Tlagee (Massett), Haida Gwaii. Her research looks to provide pathways for Indigenous communities to strengthen their Indigenous languages. Bedard's dissertation X戔aad K穩hlga Tl'a G繳usuugiigangsaang: A Haida Research Framework for Learning X戔aad Kil aims to provide a pathway for specialized Massett Haida language immersion guided by Haida community, laws, and values. 

Dr. Bedard has contributed to Haida language programming since 2007 and has taught multi-level language classes to community learners since 2015. Her work includes translation and transcription of X戔aad Kil as well as resource and curriculum development. Since 2017, Bedard has taught for the Haida Gwaii Institute (UBC Department of Forestry). Classes include Indigenous Perspectives of History, and Language and Cultural Continuity.
