Experiential Learning Seminar – Learn by Doing (Anne-Kristina Arnold, Carmen Bott, Max Karp)
Experiential learning is a way of learning through doing, reflecting and applying, rather than just listening to lectures or reading about concepts. In simple terms, it follows this cycle:
- Have an experience – try to perform or participate in something
- Reflect on it – think about what happened and why
- Make meaning from it – connect the experience to ideas, principles, or theory
- Apply what you learned – use that insight in a new situation
Experiential learning often shows up as:
- Labs
- Practicums or field work
- Case study assignments
- Hands-on client-facing simulations
- Practical exams
This seminar will explore opportunities and challenges in delivering experiential learning in BPK.
Many students in our department are looking to support their education with certifications that give them career-ready skills. Our program provides an opportunity to gain certification as a Professional Ergonomist (CCPE), a Practicing Kinesiologist (BCAK), a Clinical Exercise Physiologist (CEP), a Personal Fitness Trainer & Conditioning Specialist (CSCA, NSCA) and soon a Respiratory Therapist (RT).
Artificial Intelligence is changing the way we will educate in the future. Information has become easily accessible, so much so that educators are increasingly less the disseminators of information and more the facilitators of parsing information to understand where, when and how knowledge can be applied. Where we can add value to education is by developing skills in sourcing valid information, in knowledge application and in client-facing, practical skill development through experiential opportunities in lectures, tutorials, labs and in the community.
With the audience’s participation, Anne-Kristina and Carmen will share their experiences providing experiential opportunities to students. A few student experiences will be highlighted.
