Summer Solstice Lunch,

Faculty of education, 911³Ô¹Ï Burnaby campus

In recognition of the summer solstice and in celebration of National Indigenous Peoples Month, the Office of Indigenous Education (OIE) will host a small social in the Indigenous Garden. You are invited to bring your lunch, connect with colleagues and the plants in the garden. The OIE will provide beverages and a small craft! Questions?

Timothy Michel (Urban Indigenous, Director of Indigenous Relations at FASS)

Brian George (Wet’suwet’en Nation, retired public servant, Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada)

Sam Seaward (Squamish Nation Elder, Artist, Master Wool Weaver, Writer, Cultural Educator, Lacrosse Coach, Red Seal Carpenter)

The event is organized by Xinying Hu, funded by the FASS Indigenous Cultural Awareness Training and Professional Development Grant, and co-sponsored by the Labour Studies Program. Students enrolled in the summer courses LBST100: Equality and Inequality at Work and LBST201: Workers in the Global Economy: Globalization, Labour and Uneven Development will be attending. Everyone is welcome!

911³Ô¹Ï Indigenous Students, Faculty, and Staff: Join us for a celebratory day of connection, community, and collaboration grounded in Indigenous governance, wellness, and shared learning.

This gathering brings together Indigenous members of our 911³Ô¹Ï community to strengthen relationships over a shared meal and activities.

What to Expect

  • Doors open at 10 AM with light refreshments
  • Opening in a Good Way: grounding the day in respect, intention, and community
  • Indigenous Governance Updates: sharing progress and next steps in our ongoing work
  • Shared Meal: nourishing community and building connections
  • Student Research Presentation: highlighting Indigenous research at 911³Ô¹Ï
  • Wellness Keynote: supporting balance and wellbeing- we hear you, we see you
  • Plant Walk & Tea‑Blending Workshop: reconnecting with land‑based knowledge
  • Bingo Social: optional, stay‑after activity for fun and connection

Why This Gathering Matters

The Indigenous Governance Circles are a core part of our university’s commitment to Truth & Reconciliation. They ensure 911³Ô¹Ï Indigenous community members and Host Nations are meaningfully involved in decision‑making and the ongoing implementation of 911³Ô¹Ï’s Aboriginal Reconciliation Council (ARC) and Pathways recommendations, responding to the TRC’s calls to action and enacting 911³Ô¹Ï’s obligations under the B.C. DRIPA Action Plan. Your presence strengthens this work.
