Economics Honours

Declaration Requirements

Students are eligible to apply for entry to the program when they have met the following requirements

  • 30 units completed
  • ECON 201 completed with a C- or higher
  • MATH 152 or 155 or 158 completed with a C- or higher
  • a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0 or higher
  • an ECON program GPA of 3.0 or higher.

The department publishes the minimum CGPA below which students will not normally be considered for entry to the honours program. See /economics/undergraduate/programs/declaring.html for more information.

Students should contact a departmental advisor to apply. Students not accepted upon initial application may reapply.

Continuation in Program

To continue in the honours in economics program, students must maintain a 3.0 CGPA.

Course Information

For a course to fulfil a prerequisite, or for a required course to be accepted in a student’s economics program, a grade of C- or higher must be obtained. Access to ECON 402, 403, 435 and 499W is restricted to students who have excelled in their studies. These advanced courses are recommended for students wishing to pursue more challenging work or who plan to complete an additional degree.

MATH 150 - Calculus I with Review (4) *

Designed for students specializing in mathematics, physics, chemistry, computing science and engineering. Topics as for Math 151 with a more extensive review of functions, their properties and their graphs. Recommended for students with no previous knowledge of Calculus. In addition to regularly scheduled lectures, students enrolled in this course are encouraged to come for assistance to the Calculus Workshop (Burnaby), or Math Open Lab (Surrey). Limits, continuity, and derivatives. Techniques of differentiation, including logarithmic and implicit differentiation. The Mean Value Theorem. CMPT 120 - Introduction to Computing Science and Programming I (3) *

An elementary introduction to computing science and computer programming, suitable for students with little or no programming background. Students will learn fundamental concepts and terminology of computing science, acquire elementary skills for programming in a high-level language, e.g. Python. The students will be exposed to diverse fields within, and applications of computing science. Topics will include: pseudocode; data types and control structures; fundamental algorithms; recursion; reading and writing files; measuring performance of algorithms; debugging tools; basic terminal navigation using shell commands. An introduction to software development for students in engineering and related programs covering theory and practicum of software design, testing, and debugging. CMPT 135 - Introduction to Computer Programming II (3)

A second course in systems-oriented programming and computing science that builds upon the foundation set in CMPT 130 using a systems-oriented language such as C or C++. Topics: a review of the basic elements of programming; introduction to object-oriented programming (OOP); techniques for designing and testing programs; use and implementation of elementary data structures and algorithms; introduction to embedded systems programming. Prerequisite: CMPT 130 with a minimum grade of C-. Students with credit for CMPT 125, 126, or 129 may not take this course for further credit. Quantitative.

DATA 260 - Introductory R for Data Science (3) †

An introduction to the R programming language for data science. Exploring data: visualization, transformation and summaries. Data wrangling: reading, tidying, and data types. No prior computer programming experience required. Prerequisite: One of STAT 201, STAT 203, STAT 205, STAT 270, STAT 271, BUS 232, ECON 233, or POL 201, with a grade of at least C- or permission of the instructor. Using a mathematical software package for doing calculations in linear algebra. Development of computer models that analyze and illustrate applications of linear algebra. All calculations and experiments will be done in the Matlab software package. ECON 332 - Computational Economics (3)

Computational methods for solving and analyzing economic models. Topics include solving systems of equations, optimization, computing equilibria of economic models, computing dynamic and stochastic models, and data-driven estimation. Students will apply these methods to conduct economic analysis using a general-purpose programming language like Python. Prerequisite: ECON 201 and one of ECON 233, STAT 270, or STAT 271. An introduction to the use and interpretation of statistical analysis in the context of data typical of economic applications. ECON 335 - Cause and Effect in Economic Data (3)

Provides an introduction to statistical methods used to analyze causal questions and evaluate policies. Discusses various approaches to drawing causal inferences from observational data. Corequisite: ECON 333, STAT 285, STAT 302, or POL 315, with a minimum grade of C-. ECON 333, STAT 285, STAT 302, and POL 315 may be taken prior to or concurrently with ECON 335.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Honours Degree Requirements

For all bachelor of science (BSc) honours programs, students complete at least 120 units, which includes

  • at least 60 units that must be completed at 911³Ô¹Ï
  • satisfaction of the writing, quantitative, and breadth requirements
  • students complete at least 60 upper division units, which must include at least 48 units in upper division courses in a Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences honours program; no more than 15 upper division units that have been transferred from another institution can be used toward this requirement
  • at least 50 units (including 21 upper division units) in Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences courses
  • students complete lower division requirements for at least one Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences honours program
  • students are required to achieve an overall cumulative grade point average (CGPA) and upper division CGPA of at least 3.0, and an honours program CGPA and upper division CGPA of at least 3.0
