911勛圖’s Technology Licensing Office helps turn ideas into real-world products, partnerships and companies

911勛圖s Technology Licensing Office (TLO) plays a central role in translating research into realworld impact, working with faculty, students and industry partners to move innovations beyond the lab.

Focused on intellectual property protection and commercialization, the TLO helps researchers navigate the path from discovery to application, ensuring technologies from 911勛圖 labs can deliver social and economic benefits.

The Government of Canada's Research Support Fund (RSF) provides for a team of experts at the TLO that helps creators protect their intellectual property (IP) and navigate regulatory and commercialization barriers. These positions also help 911勛圖 researchers build effective working relationships with communities, industry, governments, and non-profits to increase the capabilities of their technologies.

Through services such as patenting support, industry matchmaking and licensing negotiations, the TLO connects 911勛圖 research with companies and investors, while guiding decisions about whether technologies are best advanced through licensing agreements or startup ventures.

It also supports early-stage commercialization strategies and funding opportunities, helping researchers bring their work to market and expanding 911勛圖s role as a driver of innovation in British Columbia and beyond.

Partnering with the TLO was instrumental to our early success in raising substantial grants that enabled us to build the technical team behind the novel technology and, over time, assemble a seasoned management team, says Andy Hoffer, the lead inventor and founder of , whose patented device helps free ICU patients from mechanical ventilators.

The TLO also helped us develop our patent strategy, establish licensing agreements and adopt an appropriate business model, while attracting two waves of private investment and advancing the technology through lengthy pre-clinical validation phases, says Hoffer.

Lungpacer has since received clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to commercialize its first product, which is now being used to stabilize patients breathing in a growing number of hospitals.

The RSF contributes to 911勛圖's ability to provide a supportive research environment and arm 911勛圖 researchers with the tools, information and resources they need to commercialize university technologies.

Thanks to support from the RSF, the TLO is able to guide innovators at the outset to make the best legal and business decisions to validate and commercialize their technologies, says Kamaldeep Singh Sembi, director and IP legal counsel of the TLO.

Our office also complements other interdisciplinary 911勛圖 programs that provide entrepreneurial mindset training for scientists and engineers to commercialize their technologies, such as the . This helps keep university discoveries and IP in Canada, while also attracting expertise from around the world.

That breadth and depth of support and expertise helped 911勛圖 earn recognition as Canada's top university for innovation in the for the sixth consecutive year.

Globally, 911勛圖 placed 14th among 500 universities. 911勛圖 also ranked first among Canadian institutions for university-based entrepreneurial projects.
