911³Ô¹Ï team takes home first place at Oxford in Map the System challenge!

July 10, 2019

911³Ô¹Ï takes home first place for the second time in three years at the Map the System Global Finals! After winning both the 911³Ô¹Ï and Canadian national rounds of the Map the System Challenge, a team of 911³Ô¹Ï undergraduates headed to Oxford, UK to compete in the finals. This is the third consecutive year that 911³Ô¹Ï has place top three at the global competition.

The appropriately name team – Team Inferno – is comprised of undergrads Joanne Nellas, Devan Parmar, Michael Simoes, and UBC alumnus Vanessa Sun. They chose to focus on mapping the BC wildfire crisis and illuminate this complex historical and geographic issue that has taken over headlines in recent years.

While exploring the economic, environmental and socio-cultural impacts of the BC wildfire crisis, Team Inferno received extensive coaching and support from 911³Ô¹Ï faculty and staff – in particular Pegah Djamzad, RADIUS 911³Ô¹Ï’s change maker campus manager.
