Professor Megan MacKenzie and Kody Sider review the Canadian government's $73.9 billion plan to procure American F-35 fighter jets. This massive military expenditure, they argue, could be better spent preparing for real disasters looming on the horizon for Canadians--one caused by intensifying climate catastrophes.

MacKenzie is Simons Chair in International Law and Human Security in the School for International Studies, and the lead of 911³Ô¹Ï's DREAM Lab, or Defence Resources Exploring Alternatives to Militarism Lab. The DREAM Lab is an intensive week-long workshop that trains students to critically re-evaluate Canada's military and defense spending, exploring alternative approaches to bolster the everyday security of Canadians. MacKenzie is a leading expert on gender and war, military culture, gender, bias and discrimination in large institutions, and post-conflict reconstruction.

Kody Sider is a graduate student at 911³Ô¹Ï’s School of Public Policy. He holds undergraduate degrees in international development and psychology.
