In the Greek traditional calendar, the period from Christmas Eve to Epiphany, called the Twelve Days, is marked by festivities where Christian and pagan customs coexist. It is a transitional period when Winter reaches its peak with darkness accompanying it and people follow various customs because they must announce the arrival of spring. Thus, they decorate every corner of the house with lush, green branches, the children sing carols with wishes for the head of the household and the family, the Christmas log in the fireplace burns day and night warding off the mischievous creatures, the women symbolically decorate the Christmas bread and the New Years bread, the churches joyfully ring the bells, the folk antics of those dressed up with masks and bells aim at the fruitfulness of the earth, and the home gatherings strengthen family ties.
