Indigenous Chronic Disease (IHU) – Student

Position Purpose:

The Student will report to the Manager, Indigenous Chronic Disease within the Indigenous Health Unit and will collaborate closely with the Indigenous Chronic Disease team, the Indigenous Health Unit and Ontario Health business Units. Ontario Health is dedicated to developing and implementing a chronic disease strategy that aligns with the Ontario Aboriginal Diabetes Strategy (OADS). As part of this commitment, it is essential to have a comprehensive understanding of the current landscape of diabetes-specific programs, funding, resources, and initiatives supporting both Indigenous and non-Indigenous people living in Ontario. Working in partnership with Ontario Health’s Chronic Disease team, the Student will conduct an environmental scan and a gap analysis of existing Indigenous-led and non-Indigenous diabetes supports including technology, education, clinical services, funding opportunities, and resources, to pinpoint areas where gaps remain. Additionally, the Student will be responsible for reviewing existing scans and scoping reviews, as well as identifying and gathering new supports. This process will involve consolidating multiple source documents into one comprehensive and up-to-date scan of diabetes care in Ontario. The Student will also be expected to identify new sources of information by searching grey literature, leading direct engagement with Indigenous partners, health service providers, internal Ontario Health business units and regions, external health system partners including the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Services Canada and exploring additional avenues to ensure all relevant supports are included.

Education and Experience:

• At minimum, completion of a bachelor’s degree (BSc, BA, or equivalent) in public health, epidemiology, social sciences, Indigenous health, or a related discipline. Candidates must also be currently enrolled in a relevant post‑graduate program, with consideration given to related work or lived experience.
• Must be completing an academic work term that is required for program completion

• Strong analytical and research skills
• Computer literacy utilizing MS Office software applications, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation software and openness to learn new systems​.
• Ability to organize, prioritize and complete assignments and work effectively under time constraints.
• Ability to work independently and work cooperatively with staff and as part of a team.
• Ability to work outside regular business hours, as required.
