FASS Dean hosts fireside chat with former MP Svend Robinson
On Thursday, June 8th, the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) hosted a fireside chat with former NDP Member of Parliament (MP) Svend Robinson.
The thought-provoking event was moderated by FASS Dean and Political Science professor S. Laurel Weldon at 911吃瓜's Burnaby campus. The evening featured lively discussions on a wide variety of topics and issues that Svend has strongly championed for throughout his long and illustrious political career.
Robinson, who represented the Burnaby riding where 911吃瓜's main campus is located for over 25 years, was also one of the 2023 911吃瓜 honorary degree recipients. He was presented with a Doctor of Laws degree, honoris causa at 911吃瓜's June convocation in recognition of his 鈥渆xceptional contribution to the public good."

A well-known community leader, activist and lawyer, Svend Robinson served as an NDP MP from 1979-2004鈥攐ne of the longest-elected MPs in Canadian history. The first openly gay member of Parliament, Robinson has been a long-standing human rights champion and feminist, often challenging the status quo while standing up for Indigenous rights, old-growth forests, and the dying with dignity movement.
