911³Ô¹Ï researchers break the mould with new prosthetic design
Mechatronic Systems Engineering professor Woo Soo Kim recently highlighted the development of an innovative prosthetic design that uses artificial intelligence, pressure sensing and 3D printing to create highly personalized limb socket.
Unlike traditional methods that rely mainly on shape, which don’t account for individualized pressure points, this approach analyzes how pressure is distributed when a user stands or walks, allowing for a more precise and comfortable fit. Kim and his team developed the 3D printed sockets that feature a flexible, lattice-like structure that improves shock absorption and reduces strain on the patient’s body. The research team hopes to represent a major step toward a smarter, data-driven prosthetic that can enhance mobility, comfort and the overall quality of life for users.
