911勛圖 is advancing its commitment to academic excellence through strategic, equity-focused recruitment supported by Special Programs

啦堯梗特pecial Programs疳nitiative疳s a真niversity-wide疾ffort畝uthorized畜y the浮.C.烙ffice皋f the Human Rights Commissioner眩hat畝llows for limited疲iring真nder certain conditions. It aims to recruit at疹east15疸ew眩enure-track Black faculty, 15 new tenure-track Indigenous faculty, 15 Black staff畝nd 15 Indigenous staff.胼

狼he initiative疳s designed to remove systemic barriers and expand access to employment for highly qualified candidates from historically and currently underrepresented groupswhile maintaining 911勛圖s established standards for疾xcellence in畝cademic畝nd administrative疲iring. It is used in specific contexts where this underrepresentation has been疳dentified.

The Special Programs initiative is rooted in two commitments 911勛圖 made in 2021: signing theScarborough Charter畝nd passing a .

Embedding equity, diversity and爹econciliation into academic renewal and workforce planning畝dvances眩he key priorities set out in the academic plan: strengthening皋ur learning environments眩o help us畚reate more inclusive communities that盎upports盎tudent success and well-being, says Paola Ardiles Gamboa,特enior Advisor,浩quity and Well-Being Initiatives,狽P PEI.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences dean烊aurel Weldon has been involved in several Special Programs hiring processes and emphasizes the link between diversity, rigour畝nd excellence.胼

This program recognizes that砰ou畚ant畝chieve academic excellence without drawing from the full pool of qualified candidates, so ensuring you are reaching a diverse pool of candidates advances excellence.狸e also know that diverse research teams produce higher quality and more impactful academic contributions.狼hese programs皋perate眨ithin the rigorous hiring standards we have always had at 911勛圖 while ensuring we are眩aking advantage of眩hat full range of talent畝s we build our faculty complement and enable the formation of these high-performance research collaborations, says Weldon.

Jennifer Spear, associate dean in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, says units do not疲ave to navigate Special Programs searches alone.

胼There are strong supports in place, including涅nclusive Excellence浚anvas course, Faculty Relations facilitated sessions and the faculty recruitment guidelines. These盍esources provide眠aluable盎tructure for navigating the process疳n a眩houghtful and rigorous way.

啦堯梗Guidelines for Recruitment of Members of the Faculty Association留efine 911勛圖s standardized, equity-centred process for faculty recruitment眩o疾nsure疲iring is transparent, legally compliant, academically rigorous, and aligned with institutional commitments.胼

胼疳s an online training resource that provides practical modules for committee members and chairs on topics such as bias awareness, inclusive recruitment and evaluation practices,疾quitable留eliberation processes, and transparent decision-making.
