Message from the Board Chair: Search for president and vice-chancellor

July 06, 2026

As 911³Ô¹Ï president and vice-chancellor Joy Johnson shared last week, she will be stepping down from her role, effective December 31, 2026.

Therefore, 911³Ô¹Ï is undertaking the process to select its next president as mandated and outlined by Policy B10.06.

This process is expected to take approximately one year and includes the formation of a Presidential Search Committee and community consultation as required by policy. We will follow all required steps outlined by policy and will work to advance this process as quickly as possible to ensure leadership continuity and stability for the university.

As part of this, we are committed to ensuring a fair and transparent search process, including robust consultation across the university. There will be many opportunities for students, faculty and staff to provide input on the position description and candidate profile for the role of president and I look forward to sharing more details as they are confirmed.

The search committee will be formed over the summer and announced in early September, and the community consultation phase is expected to occur from mid-September to early October. I will provide regular updates on the search via email and on the Board website, including a more detailed overview of the search process later this summer. If you have any questions about the process in the meantime, please reach out to president_search@sfu.ca.

At this time, I also want to recognize President Johnson’s extraordinary work—she leads with integrity and strength, and she is doing so during a challenging time for 911³Ô¹Ï and the sector. There will be opportunities for the community to celebrate her leadership and legacy before her term ends in December. For the time being, I want to thank her for her contributions and for everything she has brought to 911³Ô¹Ï and the Board of Governors.

Sincerely,

Carol Herbert
